You can receive your Reddit SMS verification code online by using a temporary mobile number, a virtual phone number, or a secondary SIM card. Reddit requires phone verification for specific accounts, especially when suspicious activity is flagged or when posting frequently in new subreddits, and the system relies on a functional mobile number to deliver a one-time password (OTP).
Quick answer
Reddit requires mobile number verification to prevent automated bot accounts. To receive your OTP online, use a non-VoIP temporary number that accepts incoming short-code messages. Free public inboxes rarely work because Reddit flags and blocks recycled or known-VoIP prefixes instantly.
Why Reddit asks for phone verification
Reddit uses short message service verification as a baseline security gate. If your account triggers automated spam filters, or if you create a new profile from a data-center IP address, the platform will prompt you to enter a mobile number before you can post, comment, or sometimes even log in.
The platform looks closely at the carrier type behind the digits. Traditional mobile network operators (MNOs) pass easily. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) numbers often hit an immediate roadblock. Reddit's security architecture specifically screens for virtual carrier identifiers to block mass account creators. If you try to use a free online number scraped from a public directory, you'll likely see an error stating that the number cannot be used for verification.
Using temporary numbers vs permanent lines
Choosing the right type of number determines whether your verification attempt succeeds or fails. Here is how the common options break down for Reddit accounts:
- Free public SMS sites: These numbers are shared publicly. Hundreds of people use them every day. Reddit bans these ranges outright, meaning an OTP will rarely arrive, and even if it does, the account security remains compromised.
- Temporary private numbers: Paid, single-use numbers assigned exclusively to you for a short window. These bypass public blacklists much more effectively because they have not been burned by thousands of prior signups.
- Long-term rental numbers: Numbers you lease for weeks or months. Ideal if you need to receive follow-up security codes or password reset links later on.
For users who need a private option without exposing personal details, Codesverify provides rental numbers for various online platforms, though availability for specific apps fluctuates based on carrier routing.
Common failure modes and troubleshooting
Even with a paid virtual number, verification can occasionally stall. Understanding why helps you fix the issue quickly.
The most frequent error is the dreaded "Please enter a valid mobile phone number" message. This means Reddit's carrier lookup tool identified the number prefix as non-mobile. To fix this, switch to a different prefix or a verified mobile-backed number.
Another common issue is code delay. Reddit's SMS gateway can experience congestion during peak hours, particularly around US evenings. If your OTP does not arrive within sixty seconds, do not spam the request button. Reddit applies a temporary rate limit after three consecutive requests, locking you out for up to an hour.
Privacy considerations
Linking your personal mobile number to a social media account creates a permanent data trail. Reddit links your phone number to your posting history if a subpoena or data breach occurs. Using a dedicated virtual number for account verification keeps your personal SIM card private, reducing unwanted marketing calls and safeguarding your primary identity.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a free online phone number for Reddit?
Almost never. Free numbers are published on public websites, and Reddit's automated systems block those IP and carrier ranges instantly to stop bots.
Why is Reddit not sending the SMS code to my virtual number?
Reddit frequently flags certain virtual carrier ranges as VoIP. If the number is recognized as a VoIP line, the system drops the outbound message before it reaches the inbox.
How long do Reddit verification codes take to arrive?
Most OTP codes arrive within 10 to 30 seconds. If it takes longer than two minutes, the carrier routing may be failing, and you should try a different number.
Will my Reddit account get banned if I use a virtual number?
Reddit's content policy focuses on user behavior rather than the phone number type, provided the account isn't flagged for automated spam or bot-like activity.
Can I use the same virtual number for multiple Reddit accounts?
Reddit limits how many accounts can be linked to a single phone number. Attempting to verify multiple profiles with the same digits will usually trigger a restriction.
What should I do if my number is permanently blocked by Reddit?
If Reddit rejects a specific number string, do not keep trying with the same prefix. Clear your browser cookies, change your IP address, and acquire a fresh mobile-backed number.
Getting started
Successfully verifying your Reddit account online depends on avoiding public recycled numbers and picking a reliable provider that supports non-VoIP routing. Take your time, test with a single rental number first, and always keep backup recovery codes saved securely.
